It is essential to have healthy teeth to speak properly, adequately chew food, and smile with confidence. Sometimes the tooth can be restored to its original function through crowns, root canals, or fillings, but if the damage to the tooth is too severe, the patient may be referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to have the tooth (or multiple teeth) removed from the mouth.
At MOSA Oral Maxillofacial & Dental Implant Surgery, we work hard to consider every option for saving a natural tooth before recommended a tooth extraction. Dr. Michael Lewis, Dr. Ryan Lloyd, and Dr. Andre LaMothe see patients of all ages for tooth extraction procedures at our offices in Monterey, Salinas, and Santa Cruz, CA. We understand that missing teeth can have a severe impact on a patient’s oral health, function, and smile, and offer a wide variety of restorative techniques following tooth extraction, such as the placement of a dental implant.
Why does my tooth need to be extracted?
Many reasons cause a tooth to require extraction, including those listed below.
Infection or Decay: If a tooth is decaying or infected and is left untreated, an extraction may be necessary. By addressing this tooth early, patients can ensure the health of their surrounding teeth.
Dental Crowding: Some teeth that appear healthy still require removal because the patient’s mouth is too small for all the teeth to fit in the jaw. This lack of space can lead to crooked teeth, gum disease, and jaw pain.
Dental Trauma: Teeth can easily be fractured or broken due to an accident or injury. If the tooth is damaged beyond repair, an extraction may be required.
Loose Teeth From Gum Disease: Periodontal or gum disease can cause teeth to become loose or infected. When this occurs, extraction may be necessary to restore the health of the gums and surrounding teeth.
We will perform a thorough oral examination to determine if tooth removal is necessary. Sometimes, this requires 3D scanning to assess the tooth’s relationship with other important structures in the mouth, such as the nerve in the lower jaw and other surrounding healthy teeth.
Tooth Restoration
Teeth play a vital role in the overall health of the mouth, and it is important to explore options for tooth restoration following removal. Our oral surgeons are experts in restoring teeth with dental implants and can provide patients with a variety of replacement options. In some cases, the desired restoration can be placed at the same time the tooth is removed, allowing patients to never go without their tooth.
